Industries propel UP's march to $1 trillion goal
UP sees strong growth, rising GSDP, jobs, exports surge

Inaugurating the Namo Bharat Rapid Rail and Meerut Metro route last month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said that a developed Uttar Pradesh is essential for a developed India. This long-held view is taking root under the Yogi Adityanath-led state govt, which has driven growth over nine years. Statistics released by the state govt to mark its ninth anniversary last week duly back this fact. When Yogi took over as the UP CM, the state’s GSDP stood at Rs 14.5 lakh crore, while unemployment was pegged at 6.4%. The number of registered factories was just over 15,000, while exports hovered around Rs 84,000 crore. Connectivity bottlenecks and complex regulatory processes also marred the state. Nine years on, the picture has shifted dramatically. In 2025, UP projected a GSDP of Rs 30.8 lakh crore by the end of the financial year, while unemployment has dropped to 2.4%. The number of factories has surged to over 27,000, and exports have crossed the Rs 2 lakh crore mark. The numbers speak for a structural transformation of the state’s industrial ecosystem. Officials said that a clear vision has driven the turnaround. “Under this, law and order was made non-negotiable on one hand, while on the other, the govt gave a target to work towards through the one trillion dollar economy goal besides embracing the Viksit UP for Viksit Bharat objectives,” said Nand Gopal Gupta Nandi, UP industries and infrastructure development minister. To complement the effort, the govt continued to build air and road infrastructure to bring down costs and make destinations approachable. It also came up with additional incentives to take development to the underserved areas in Purvanchal and Bundelkhand. The efforts seem to be showing. “Manufacturing has emerged as a growth engine, with Gross Value Added rising from Rs 1.05 lakh crore in 2014-15 to Rs 2.81 lakh crore in 2024-25,” said former president, Confederation of Indian Industries, Upasana Arora. UP is focused on big projects like UP Defence Corridor spanning six cities, which has drawn investments from key players such as DRDO and Adani Defence and Aerospace. Sector-specific parks-from electronics and semiconductor hubs to a medical device park and film city are coming up rapidly, particularly in the YEIDA region. The ‘Nivesh Mitra’ portal now integrates over 520 services across 43 departments.
