SI duped of Rs6L in ‘digital arrest’ fraud | Lucknow News
Lucknow: In a case involving ‘digital arrest’, a sub-inspector (SI) posted at the police training centre in Sitapur was allegedly duped of Rs6 lakh by cybercriminals. Cyber police managed to recover Rs 95,000 and froze several suspicious bank accounts linked to the fraud. The incident came to light on Wednesday.The victim, Narayan Singh of Shantinagar in Ghaziabad, is posted in the transport branch of the police training centre. According to his complaint, he received a phone call on Feb 20 from an unknown number. The caller introduced himself as a senior inspector from the CBI and claimed that an FIR was registered against him in Jammu & Kashmir.The fraudster alleged that Singh’s important documents were found with a Pakistani soldier named Afzal. The caller allegedly showed fabricated arrest warrants and property attachment documents.Police said the fraudsters kept Singh under continuous video surveillance through a video call. The accused also extracted his personal and financial details.On Feb 23, Singh was allegedly coerced into transferring Rs1 lakh to a bank account. The following day, he was again instructed to transfer Rs5 lakh. Realising he was cheated, Singh approached the cyber police.Cyber police station in-charge Ajay Rawat said this is the first reported case in the district where a govt employee fell victim to a digital arrest fraud.
