This is a huge boost for UP theatre talent: Dr Anil Rastogi on Padma Shri honour | Lucknow News
Lucknow-based veteran theatre artist, film actor and former scientist at the CSIR–Central Drug Research Institute (CDRI), Dr Anil Rastogi, has been awarded the Padma Shri in recognition of his long and diverse contribution to the performing arts. At 83, Dr Rastogi remains actively associated with theatre and screen. Widely known for his role in Ishaqzaade, he has also worked in films, web series, TV shows and commercials, establishing a steady presence across mediums while continuing his primary engagement with theatre. Recently, he completed 100 plays, a milestone that reflects a career spanning more than six decades.

Dr Rastogi said, “After Raj Bisaria sahab, I do not recall another theatre practitioner from Uttar Pradesh receiving the Padma Shri, despite the high quality of work being done in across the state. In that sense, this recognition means a great deal to me.”
Dr Rastogi’s association with theatre began in 1961, followed by his appointment at CDRI, Lucknow, in 1962. Since then, both journeys have progressed in parallel. “I performed my first play in 1961, and joined the Central Drug Research Institute in 1962. From that point onwards, my professional career and my theatre life moved side by side,” he said.

He acknowledged that balancing scientific research with theatre was challenging, and credited his workplace for enabling this dual pursuit. “I’ve fortunate to have worked with stalwarts like BV Karant, Bansi Kaul, Ravi Vaswani, Ranjeet Kapoor, Raj Bisaria, Surya Mohan Kulshrestha, among others.”He also acknowledge the role of his family in sustaining his artistic journey. “My wife continues to support me by helping with rehearsals, especially now when age has affected memory,” he said.
