RMLIMS docs treat girl with 3 rare conditions | Lucknow News
Lucknow: Doctors at Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences (RMLIMS) successfully treated a 12-year-old girl with an extremely rare birth condition. The girl had three serious congenital problems occurring together, something doctors claimed was probably never reported anywhere in the world before.
The girl had uterine didelphys, which means she was born with two uteruses and two vaginas instead of one. Second, she had ectopic ureters on both sides, meaning the tubes that carry urine from the kidneys opened in the wrong place, causing continuous urine leakage. Third, she had an anorectal malformation, in which the opening of the anus was very small and not properly formed. The patient, hailing from Ballia district, suffered from constant urine leakage even though she could pass urine normally. She also had bowel problems due to the narrow anal opening and passed small, pellet-like stools. After she was brought to RMLIMS a month ago, doctors from urology and renal transplant department carried out a detailed examination. As her symptoms were unusual, the team conducted advanced scans and endoscopic tests.Under the leadership of Prof Ishwar Ram Dhayal, head of the department, the team decided to perform surgeries in stages to ensure safety and better recovery. In the first stage, surgeons worked to improve bowel function by correcting the large intestine, which was damaged due to constant pressure over the years. In the second stage, doctors widened the anal opening to allow normal bowel movements. In the final stage, the urinary problem was addressed. Doctors said the girl is recovering well and can now lead a normal life without the physical and emotional distress she faced earlier.Regarding the extra uterus and vagina, Prof Dhayal said they do not require surgery at present, and the child would be able to live a normal life. “This case shows how careful examination, modern diagnostic tools, planned surgeries, and teamwork can help treat even the rarest medical conditions,” Prof Dhayal said. The surgical team included Dr Sarvagya Jain and Dr Prithvi, while anaesthesia was managed under the guidance of Prof PK Das.Director, RMLIMS, Prof CM Singh said the successful treatment highlights the institute’s growing expertise in managing complex paediatric urology cases and its commitment to providing advanced and compassionate care to patients from across Uttar Pradesh.
