Lucknow: A 25-year-old man, who allegedly turned to crime after suffering heavy losses in online gambling, was arrested by Jankipuram police on Monday for stealing two boxes containing 21 gold rings worth around Rs 10 lakh from a jewellery store in Jankipuram.The entire incident, which unfolded in a matter of seconds, was captured in the shop’s CCTV cameras, on Sunday.
Police said the accused, Sumit Mishra (25), a resident of Kamlaabad Barouli in Jankipuram, had conducted the recce of the locality and struck during business hours by posing as a customer.Sumit works in a private firm and had recently suffered losses in online gambling, police said.Inspector Vinod Tiwari said the accused reached the shop on a motorcycle and asked the shopkeeper to show him rings. After examining a few designs and expressing dissatisfaction, he asked for more options.The moment the shopkeeper turned his back to get additional stock, the culprit grabbed two display boxes from the counter and escaped.The jeweller alerted the police. The CCTV camera installed inside the shop captured the act, providing crucial leads to investigators.Based on the footage and local intelligence, police arrested the accused on Tiwaripuram-Kotwa road on Monday morning.During interrogation, Mishra confessed that he incurred substantial losses in online gambling and stole the jewellery to sustain his lifestyle.Police recovered 19 stolen rings and Rs 20,000 cash from his possession. He planned to sell other rings but did not get good return, therefore, he waited for a good deal.Meanwhile, members of the Janhit Udyog Vyapar Mandal, led by state president KK Awasthi, felicitated inspector Vinod Tiwari for swift action.
