‘48 criminals killed, over 3k hurt in encounters in 2025’

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Police gunned down 48 criminals in encounters and injured over 3,153 others across 2,739 police confrontations throughout the state in 2025. During these operations, 138 police personnel were injured, and one officer lost his life, said director general of police (DGP) Rajeev Krishna.Addressing journalists at police headquarters on Wednesday, he said this marks the highest number of encounters in a year where habitual criminals were neutralised, without a single incident of communal flare-up.

Krishna highlighted the proactive policing and stringent “Operation Conviction” measures that ensured swift justice and rigorous legal follow-ups. Over the past two years, police advocacy in courts has resulted in sentencing of 1,25,985 criminals, including 10,414 who received life imprisonment. Under this, 79 convicts involved in heinous crimes have been handed the death penalty. Over the last eight and a half years, police action has led to the death of 266 criminals and injuries to 10,990 others. During the same period, 18 police personnel were martyred, 1,783 injured, and over 33,000 wanted criminals arrested. The DGP also detailed operations against mafia networks, noting that 68 gangs were targeted and property worth over Rs 4,137 crore was seized or destroyed. Anti-corruption drives included 687 traps, resulting in 41 govt officials being caught accepting bribes. The establishment of Mission Shakti Centres has shown notable results, reducing crimes against women and children by 34% within three months. Crime rates plummet UP also witnessed a steep decline in key crime categories compared with 2016. Organised crime, particularly dacoity, fell 90% from 240 to 23 cases, while robberies dropped 84% from 3,797 to 610 incidents. Murders decreased by 46% (4,330 to 2,358), and rape cases fell 53% (3,196 to 1,487). Riots reduced by 69%, from 7,153 to 2,202, highlighting effective crowd management and preventive policing.
