Four-month overstay by Uzbek woman at sensitive border puts agencies on alert

Lucknow: The arrest of a 32-year-old Uzbek national at the sensitive Badni (Barhni) border in Siddharthnagar district on Tuesday triggered a high-level security probe, with multiple intelligence and security agencies going into alert mode to trace her activities during a nearly four-month period of illegal stay in India. The woman, identified as Jarnigor Tukhtaboeva, was apprehended after it was found that her Indian visa was valid only from Aug 19 to Sept 2. However, she allegedly continued to remain in the country well beyond the expiry period, raising serious questions about her movements, contacts, and possible border links.

Following her arrest, a case was registered under the Foreigners Act, after which local police, the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), and intelligence agencies launched a joint investigation. Officials said the focus was on reconstructing her complete travel history, identifying places where she stayed, people she met, and the sources that financed her movement and expenses during the illegal stay. Immediately after her detention, the SSB intensified surveillance along the Indo-Nepal border. Dog squads were deployed to conduct extensive search operations across unpaved routes, bushes, farmlands, and suspected hideouts near the border. Investigators are also examining whether the woman crossed the border earlier through the same stretch or facilitated the movement of others. Police are preparing a detailed timeline of her activities over the past 4 months. Her mobile phones, call records, social media activity, and other digital footprints are being examined. Officials are also probing possible Nepal-border linkages, given the strategic sensitivity of the region. Border police stations were put on maximum alert, with strict checking of suspicious individuals and vehicles. “An FIR was registered and the investigation is underway on multiple points. The entire network, if any, will be exposed,” said CO Mayank Kumar Dwivedi, adding that agencies are working in close coordination.
