Lucknow tops in UP as 1.5L children take admission under RTE

Lucknow: More than 1.5 lakh children from economically weaker and disadvantaged sections have secured admission to private schools under the Right to Education (RTE) Act during the first and second phases of the admission process across Uttar Pradesh, with Lucknow recording the highest number of admissions.According to officials from the basic education department, the admissions were carried out through an online system that included application submission, document verification, and a computerised lottery. In the first phase of the process, over 1.09 lakh seats were allotted to eligible students. The second phase lottery resulted in admissions for more than 47,000 additional children. Officials said the RTE admissions are aimed at ensuring access to education for children belonging to economically weaker sections by reserving seats for them in private schools, as mandated under the Act. District-wise data show that Lucknow recorded the highest number of admissions, with a total of 15,586 seats allotted across both phases. Kanpur Nagar followed with 8,950 admissions, while Varanasi recorded 8,129 seats. Agra reported 6,760 admissions, and Moradabad saw 5,970 children secure seats under the scheme. Other districts with significant numbers of admissions include Aligarh (5,361), Bulandshahr (5,345), Meerut (4,926), and Ghaziabad (4,890). Officials noted that several other districts across the state also reported substantial participation in the RTE admission process.
