CAG raises red flag: Lucknow Metro running on weak tracks
CAG audit report has revealed that Lucknow Metro tracks are weaker than prescribed Indian Railway standards.

LUCKNOW: Lucknow Metro is running on weak tracks than the prescribed norms. This has been flagged in the comptroller and auditor general (CAG) audit report which was tabled in the UP Assembly by state finance minister Suresh Khanna on Friday. The report raises concerns about the quality of rails being used in the Metro’s rolling stock system, specifically regarding their hardness levels. CAG report said that inspection of the Lucknow Metro tracks by IIT-Kanpur revealed that the tracks were less strong than the required standards. The track strength in the depot was found between 229 to 242 BHN (Brinell Hardness Number), while on the main line it was between 291 to 308 BHN. These levels were much below the Indian Railway standards.According to IIT Kanpur, lower hardness means the rails may wear out faster. This can increase maintenance costs and reduce the lifespan of both rails and train wheels. If wheel hardness does not properly match rail hardness, wheels may deform over time, potentially affecting the stability and smooth movement of Metro trains, besides rasing concern for passenger safety. As per Indian Railway standards, Metro rails must meet strict hardness requirements to ensure durability and safety. Rails used in depot areas (HH 880 grade) should have a minimum hardness of 260 BHN (Brinell Hardness Number). While for main line tracks (HH 1080 grade), the required hardness range is between 340 and 390 BHN. Harder rails generally last longer and reduce wear and tear.
