SGPGI’s childhood cancer day event stresses prompt response

Lucknow: Emphasising importance of early diagnosis, proper nursing care and public awareness in improving survival among children with cancer, Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Science organised an International Childhood Cancer Day celebration and awareness programme, along with a state-level continued medical education programme and workshop on paediatric oncology nursing.The programme was organised by paediatric surgical super speciality department and the College of Nursing at the HG Khurana Auditorium, in which healthcare professionals, nursing students and delegates from across the state participated. Experts said timely identification of symptoms, specialised nursing support and coordinated treatment played crucial role in better outcomes for children with cancer.

SGPGIMS director Prof R K Dhiman inaugurated the event in the presence of chief medical superintendent Prof Devendra Gupta and medical superintendentProf Harshvardhan. To symbolise courage and hope, inaugural lamp was lit by children undergoing cancer treatment.Specialists from KGMU, RMLIMS Lucknow and AIIMS Rae Bareli delivered lectures on paediatric oncology nursing, while hands-on demonstrations were conducted to strengthen practical skills among participants. NGOs working with children with cancer also shared their experiences in providing support and care.As part of the awareness activities, nursing students presented a skit highlighting need for early detection and supportive care. A poster competition and interactive quiz were also organised to engage participants and reinforce key messages.
