Rs 1.5 crore jewels gone from bank locker, FIR lodged

Lucknow: Jewellery worth nearly Rs1.5 crore was allegedly stolen from a bank locker at a nationalised bank’s Kapoorthala branch in Aliganj, prompting the locker holder to lodge an FIR accusing bank staff of theft.The complainant, Babita Sinha, a resident of Sopan enclave in Priyadarshini colony, reported the matter at Aliganj police station on Wednesday. According to her complaint, the locker was jointly held with her late husband, Rajesh Sinha, a businessman who passed away some time ago. The locker reportedly contained gold and silver jewellery valued at around Rs1.5 crore.

Babita said that when she accessed the locker on Jan 12, she found all the jewellery missing. She immediately informed bank officials, following which an internal check was conducted. However, no trace of the missing ornaments was found.Aliganj inspector, Ashok Kumar Sonkar said an FIR was registered against unknown bank employees on charges of theft. “There are no visible signs of external damage to the locker. We are investigating how and when the jewellery went missing,” he said.Police are also probing a gold loan availed in the name of the deceased. Babita reportedly had no prior knowledge of this loan. Investigators are probing whether the jewellery was removed to avail the loan or whether any other irregularity was involved. Police officials said statements of bank staff are being recorded, and locker operation records, CCTV footage and related documents are being scrutinised.
