Lucknow joins nationwide protest against SC order on community dogs

Chanting slogans and holding posters that read ‘Awara nahi, hamare hain,’ over 200 activists and citizens gathered at Eco Garden on Sunday as Lucknow joined 46 cities nationwide to protest Supreme Court orders on relocating community dogs. The leaderless, citizen-led movement, inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s “Do or Die” call, demanded coexistence and humane solutions. The protests follow a fresh interim order directing the removal of dogs from public institutions, after an earlier Delhi NCR roundup order was partially stayed following public outcry. ‘Interim order being treated as final’ Highlighting the ground realities, Animal activist Rakhi Kishore explains, “The interim order is being treated as a final order on the ground, leading to the indiscriminate picking up and relocation of community dogs, including sterilised animals and lactating mothers, even though the matter is still pending before the Court.”

“Protesters have placed three demands before the apex court: an immediate stay or review of the interim order, the formation of an expert committee to recommend humane solutions, and that no further directions be passed without hearing all concerned parties,” shares the activist.
