Lucknow: Animal rights activists and residents formed a human chain at Eco Garden on Sunday to protest the Supreme Court’s interim order on community dogs, ahead of the next hearing on Jan 7. The protesters sought its withdrawal, saying it violated existing animal welfare laws and calling the directive “impractical and unscientific”.Members of animal welfare organisations, students, and residents held placards demanding protection to dogs.
Protesters said the latest interim order of Nov 7, 2025, mandating removal of dogs from public spaces like schools, hospitals, and transport hubs, led to cruelty and illegal relocations in several cities. Animal activist Rakhi Kishore said the focus should be on humane population control.“We want the Supreme Court to strengthen the Animal Birth Control (ABC) Rules, 2001, and promote the ‘catch, neuter, vaccinate and release’ method,” she said. Veterinarians and legal experts who joined the protest said that building shelters for large numbers of animals was not feasible and could increase disease risks.
