UP to expands dialysis units, push cancer care to districts after health review

Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh govt has decided to scale up free dialysis services and accelerate the rollout of cancer treatment facilities at the district level as part of efforts to strengthen the state’s public health system. The decisions followed an intensive divisional-level review of health services in Lucknow and Bareilly divisions on Tuesday.Chairing the meeting, additional chief secretary (medical health and family welfare) Amit Kumar Ghosh said the focus was on improving quality, accountability and outcomes on the ground. He stressed the need for 100% coverage of flagship health schemes so that benefits reach the intended population without gaps.

Ghosh directed officials to expand dialysis units across the state to ensure wider access to free services. He also asked for a concrete action plan to establish cancer units in district hospitals that currently lack such facilities, suggesting that public-private partnership (PPP) models be explored, similar to dialysis services. Emphasising diagnostics, he ordered preparation of district-wise reports on the availability of MRI facilities in line with demand and instructed officials to identify gaps affecting access to affordable healthcare.The ACS also underlined the importance of strengthening critical care services through focused training and capacity building of staff to ensure optimal use of ventilators and CCUs. He called for uninterrupted oxygen supply, safe drinking water and clean bed linen in medical institutions, in line with prescribed standards.National Health Mission (NHM) mission director and secretary (medical health) Dr Pinky Jowel said Mukhya Mantri Jan Arogya Melas should be strengthened as an effective platform for primary healthcare, enabling people to access services closer to home. She stressed regular monitoring of the melas across districts and directed that all health sub-centres ensure full availability of human resources.The review followed an extensive inspection of 2,947 health facilities of various levels across Lucknow and Bareilly divisions between Dec 26 and 28.
