UP Cong chief welcomes SC stay on HC relief to Sengar | Lucknow News
Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Ajay Rai on Monday welcomed the Supreme Court‘s decision to stay the Delhi High Court order that suspended the life sentence of expelled BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar in the 2017 Unnao rape case.Referring to the apex court’s intervention, Rai said the relief granted to Sengar by the High Court has been put on hold. He stated that the earlier order came due to what he described as shortcomings in legal advocacy.
The interim order was passed by a 3-judge vacation bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant while hearing a petition filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which challenged the High Court’s decision. During the hearing, the apex court also noted that the former Uttar Pradesh legislator continued to remain in jail in connection with another case. Sengar was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment in the 2017 Unnao rape case. The investigation was conducted by the CBI following directions from the Supreme Court.
