Homeless get Ganj police protection against biting cold

Lucknow: As fog thickens in the city, winter nights become merciless for the destitute. On pavements, under flyovers, near shuttered shops and deserted bus stops, as the homeless curl up, shivering under little more than thin plastic sheets or torn clothes, men and women of Hazratganj police step beyond their call of duty. A constable wakes an elderly man sleeping near a closed showroom and covers him with a blanket. Another cop kneels beside a woman huddled with her child near a pavement, and places a blanket over gently so as not to startle the sleeping child. “These people comprise the invisible population,” said one member of the police team, adding, “If we ensure even one night of warmth, it is our biggest reward.”SHO, Hazratganj Vikram Singh said, “Policing is not just about enforcing law; it is about standing with people when they need us most. On such freezing nights, a blanket provided by us to save a life justifies true purpose of our uniform.” Ano elderly woman folds her hands in gratitude, saying she never imagined police would come looking for her in the middle of the night to provide such comfort.
