Grant for LU study on Himalayas

Lucknow: Lucknow University‘s geology department has received an Advanced Research Grant from the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) for a study of the north western Himalayas. The project, funded with nearly Rs 90 lakh and led by assistant professor Shashi Ranjan Rai, focuses on understanding how rocks deep within the Himalayas were heated, squeezed, and pushed to the surface over millions of years. Using methods like studying rock composition, mineral changes, and the history of pressure and temperature, the study aims to trace the journey of these rocks over time.

“This project gives us a unique chance to study the Gianbul Dome in detail. The results will improve our understanding of Himalayan formation and global mountain building processes,” said Rai. Apart from academic knowledge, the study has practical benefits that will help assess earthquake risks, landslides, and other natural hazards, aiding planners, engineers, and disaster management teams in making safe decisions for people living in the Himalayan region.
