‘80% cancer patients reach hospitals late’

Lucknow: Immunotherapy has emerged as a breakthrough in cancer care, but it must be used alongside chemotherapy, surgery, and radiotherapy for optimal results. This was emphasised by experts during the 39th Foundation Day celebrations of the radiotherapy department at King George’s Medical University (KGMU) on Wednesday. More than 100 faculty members, doctors, students, and paramedical staff attended the event. Addressing the gathering, Dr MLB Bhatt, director of Kalyan Singh Cancer Institute, said, “The cancer cases are rising rapidly across India, with about 1.5 million fresh diagnoses every year. Nearly 70–80% of patients reach hospitals at an advanced stage, making treatment more difficult,” he said. Explaining the advantages of immunotherapy, Dr Bhatt said it boosts the body’s ability to identify and destroy cancer cells. “It strengthens the immune system, enabling it to target malignant cells while sparing healthy tissue,” he added. Prof Sudhir Singh said lower doses of immunotherapy have shown promising results, particularly in head and neck cancers, helping reduce treatment costs. KGMU vice chancellor Prof Soniya Nityananda stressed the role of lifestyle changes in both prevention and recovery. “Avoid processed foods like pizza, burgers, and noodles. Choose seasonal fruits, green vegetables, and immunity-boosting foods. Regular exercise for 30 to 60 minutes a day is also essential,” she advised. Dr Shaleen Kumar, head of radiotherapy at SGPGI, said advances in technology have made treatment more precis.Dr VK Mishra from Tata Memorial Hospital, Varanasi, shared insights on cancer care infrastructure.
