KGMU gets design registrationpatent for its device for babies

Lucknow: King George’s Medical University (KGMU) has been granted a design registration patent for its newly developed infant feeding tube (IFT) uro bag connector, a device intended to assist in urine collection from babies. The patent application was filed in Feb 2025.The connector allows a standard adult uro bag to be connected to an infant feeding tube, offering a simplified method for a procedure that has long presented challenges in paediatric healthcare. Officials said that urine collection in newborns was traditionally difficult due to the absence of compatible and hygienic collection systems. Existing methods often involved improvised solutions, such as taping uro bag pipes to feeding tubes, which may be unreliable and increase the risk of contamination. Ensuring accurate and sterile sample collection is critical in infant care, as early detection of medical conditions through urine analysis plays a key role in timely intervention. The IFT uro bag connector was conceptualised, developed and tested entirely in-house at KGMU. By utilising commonly available medical supplies — infant feeding tubes and adult uro bags — the device eliminates the need for specialised equipment. This feature may be especially beneficial in resource-limited healthcare settings. The development was led by an interdisciplinary team comprising Prof Anand Pandey from the paediatric surgery department, engineer Sumit Kumar Vaish, technical officer at SIB SHInE and HOD of paediatric surgery department, Prof JD Rawat. The team combined clinical insight with engineering expertise to create a device that is compact, cost-effective and easy to use.“Their collaborative effort reflects the university’s focus on developing practical medical solutions through in-house research and innovation,” said Prof Anand. He also said that a complete utility patent for the device was filed and is currently under examination.
